Cloth nappies return as a solution to Penrith’s bin troubles.

Cloth nappies return as a solution to Penrith’s bin troubles.SMELLY, dirty nappies are clogging up residual waste bins throughout the Penrith region.

One Glenmore Park resident wants to know why people don’t just switch to cloth nappies.

Not the cloth nappies of old though - modern cloth nappies.

Shea Rigney said using the cloth nappies with 10-month-old Annabelle was much easier than disposables.

“Of a morning, I put a (nappy) liner in it and put it on her,” she said.

“(When the nappy needs to be changed) I can pull the nappy away. There might be a couple of brown marks, not poop, just marks, and I put it in the nappy bucket, take the liner out and flush it.

“Then I can just pull the nappy apart, put it in the washing, hang it out to dry, then we’re ready to go.”

Mrs Rigney said the nappies, which she bought online, were ultimately cheaper and more environmentally friendly than disposables.

She said it cost about $400 to set up, paid for by the baby bonus, and when compared with buying disposables every week, was much cheaper.

“They’re made out of different materials too - these are bamboo (making them more environmentally friendly than disposables),” she said.

“(They) require less water than cotton. You don’t need to use any bleaches, don’t need to soak them, just wash every second day.”

Mrs Rigney said “everyone was up in arms about cloth nappies” when it was suggested as an alternative to disposables.

“A lot of day-cares are happy to use them. It saves them rubbish, they just put them in a bag and give them back to you,” she said.

“They’re also so cute and you can get trim fit ones.

“I have only ever had one poop explosion. We found (disposables) were always leaking but only once has that happened (with cloth), and it was the world’s biggest poop.”
